Rock Island State Park :: Tennessee

Rock Island State Park is around an hour and a half outside of Nashville... smack in the middle of Tennessee aka the middle of nowhere.  The closest “big” town is Sparta, TN.  I personally love the green rolling hills and the one lane country roads of Tennessee’s backwoods so this is one of my favorite get aways.

Rock Island State Park offers camping, canoeing, kayaking, picnicking, fishing, has a children’s playground and hiking.  The park has over 20 campsites located throughout it's 883 acres.  The park is along the Caney Fork River which winds its way through large limestone rocks.  The river offers beaches, rocks for lounging, swimming holes and breathtaking waterfalls.

I parked at the Twin Falls trailhead.  There is another trail head closer to the larger waterfall but I couldn’t find it.  From the trailhead I hiked down to the river.  Once at the river there isn’t really a trail.  You have to use your parkour mountain goat skills and scale your way down the rocky river bank.  I crossed the river at a safe location and on the other side of the river, where the trailhead I couldn’t find was, there is a actual trail.  This trail is a short distance down to the magnificent water fall pictured above.
